How to backtest a gold trading bot on XAUUSD in cTrader

A backtest shows how a bot would have traded on historical prices. A demo account lets you observe how it behaves as new prices arrive, using simulated funds. Keep a separate record of each test so you can compare them later.

1. Set up a repeatable test

Open Algo in cTrader desktop, select your cBot and create an instance on your broker’s gold versus US dollar symbol (XAUUSD). Check the symbol specifications. Record the bot version, timeframe, volume, time zone and parameters. Save the settings before you start.

2. Choose the data and costs

In Backtesting, choose a historical period. Record your starting balance, price data source, spread and commission. Reserve a later period to check the same settings on data you did not use to choose them.

3. Examine a losing trade

Record the trade count, net result and maximum equity drawdown. Drawdown measures the fall from a peak in account equity, including open positions. For example, a fall from 10,000 to 9,200 is an 8% drawdown. This is an illustration. Pick a losing trade and review its entry, exit, timestamps and costs. Save the report and repeat the test over the second period with the same settings.

4. Compare with a demo account

Check that the selected account is a demo. Run the same settings on the same symbol and log timestamps, spreads and execution prices. If results differ, check prices and costs first. Historical and simulated results do not guarantee future returns.
